A PREP guide for your
Family Photo Session
Family photo sessions are a perfect way to freeze special moments in time, and with a little preparation, we can make the experience stress-free and fun. Here’s everything you need to know to get ready for your session, from choosing a location to tips for kids and pets.
Location
The location sets the tone for your photos, so pick a spot that suits your family’s style. If you love the outdoors, parks, forests, or beaches make for great natural backdrops. If you prefer an urban vibe, a cityscape or your favorite café can work wonders. Not sure where to shoot? I’m happy to recommend a spot that fits the vision you’re looking for!
Timing
The best time for photos is during the “golden hour,” which happens shortly after sunrise or before sunset. This dreamy light is soft and flattering for everyone. If those times don’t work for your family’s schedule, we’ll plan to make the most of the lighting available.
Inclement Weather
Rain doesn’t have to dampen your session! If the forecast looks uncertain, we can reschedule or opt for an indoor location. But if you’re feeling adventurous, rainy-day photos can be truly magical. Picture colorful umbrellas, cozy hugs, and playful moments in the rain—it’s a unique way to capture your family’s spirit!
What to Wear
Coordinating your outfits can create a polished, timeless look. While I suggest not matching exactly, like wearing identical outfits, you totally can if that’s your style! Choose complementary colors and patterns that reflect your family’s personality. Avoid bold logos or graphics, as they can be distracting in photos. Most importantly, wear clothes that are comfortable and allow everyone to feel their best.
Prepping Children
A little preparation can go a long way in helping kids enjoy the photo session. Before the session, pack a bag with essentials like snacks, water, and small items (like toys or lollipops) that can grab their attention when needed. If they’re old enough, take a moment to explain what the session is about and how much the photos mean to you. This can help them understand the importance of being on their best behavior. Many families also plan a fun treat afterward, like ice cream or a trip to the park, as a reward for being good listeners.
Make sure your little ones are well-fed and rested before the session to set them up for success. And remember—it’s okay if things don’t go perfectly! I’m ready to handle moods, meltdowns, and everything in between to capture great photos. My approach is all about making the session fun and stress-free for everyone, so give yourself and your kids some grace. The authentic, joyful moments we’ll capture will be worth it!
Pets
Pets are part of the family too! Depending on the location, we will need to check to see if they are allowed to join. To keep things smooth, I recommend bringing an extra person to help manage your pet or hold the leash when they’re not in the shot. Exercising your pet beforehand can help them stay calm, and treats or toys are great for keeping their attention.
Posing
No need to stress about posing—I’ll take care of it! The most heartfelt photos happen when you’re simply being yourselves. I’ll guide you into relaxed, natural poses and encourage fun, candid moments along the way. Whether it’s sharing a laugh, holding hands, or snuggling up, we’ll capture the genuine love and connection that makes your family unique.
